How Our All-Natural PRP Treatment Helps Reverse Hair Loss
Hair loss can dramatically affect your appearance and your self-confidence. PRP hair restoration treatments can help reverse hair loss — without surgery, stitches, or downtime. Here’s how it works.

If you’re experiencing hair loss, you’re not alone. About 80% of men and half of women experience a significant degree of hair loss during their lifetimes. Of course, just knowing you have a lot of company doesn’t really restore your confidence — and it certainly does nothing to restore your hair.

At Paviol Dermatology, Scot Paviol, MD, and our team take hair loss seriously, including the thinning most of us experience as we get older. At our practice in Charlotte, North Carolina, we help patients restore hair growth naturally using platelet-rich plasma (PRP), a product derived from a patient’s own blood. Here’s how PRP hair restoration treatments work.

The science of PRP

Your blood contains several components, like red blood cells, white blood cells, plasma, and platelets. Plasma is the liquid part of your blood, and platelets are tiny cell fragments that aid in blood clotting and healing.

Made in the bone marrow, platelets get their name from their plate-like shape when they’re in their “inactive” form. Platelets become activated when they receive signals from injured tissues, producing special proteins called growth factors that aid in healing.

Interesting fact: When a platelet is activated, it grows “arms,” changing its shape so it looks more like an octopus.

Platelets may be tiny, but they’re powerful. Not only do they help your blood clot when you have a cut or other injury, but growth factors also promote the development of new, healthy cells to replace cells damaged by an injury, and they also support the growth of new, tiny blood vessels that support healing and regeneration.

Because of all these benefits, PRP has been used extensively in the medical field to promote healing after surgery or to help treat damage to cartilage, joints, and connective tissues. It’s also widely used cosmetically to help rejuvenate aging or sun-damaged skin. (Ever hear of a “vampire facial”? That contains PRP.) More recently, researchers have used PRP therapy to treat hair loss.

PRP treatment: What to expect

PRP helps battle hair loss by restoring hair follicles that have become inactive. It also supports active follicles by promoting thicker, fuller hair growth.

PRP offers several benefits for hair restoration:

  • No surgery is involved
  • There’s no downtime afterward
  • There’s no risk of allergic reaction or rejection
  • Treatments can be entirely customized

We perform the entire procedure in our office, and treatments can be repeated based on your goals.

Your treatment begins with the extraction of a small amount of your blood. The blood is processed in a special device that separates the platelets and plasma from the rest of your blood.

Next, we numb the scalp, and the PRP solution is injected around the hair follicles in the treatment area, allowing those all-important growth factors to go to work promoting better hair growth. Treatments are relatively quick, making it easy to fit your visit into your busy schedule.

Start enjoying thicker, fuller hair!

Dr. Paviol often recommends PRP therapy in combination with special supplements designed to provide your follicles with the nutrients they need for optimal function, along with healthy lifestyle changes to support hair growth. Your treatment will be entirely tailored to your goals.
